Decorating and protecting are not the same material
A decorative throw is chosen by eye, a protective one is chosen by how it washes. If yours has to go through the machine every fortnight because of a pet or children, chunky knit and long-pile faux fur are poor choices however beautiful they look. Take fleece or microfiber, and save the fine material for a sofa that takes no punishment.

How do you stop a throw sliding off? On leather or faux leather, only a non-slip backing works for any length of time. Tucking it under the cushions lasts one evening, no more.
Throw or sofa cover? A cover hugs the sofa and hides it. A throw is laid on, moved and washed far more easily. If your sofa is damaged, buy a cover. If it is in good condition, a throw is enough and you can change it with the seasons.
